It works for me. That's quite good actually, as at work I rarely want to open a mailto link on a website using my work email address.

I only have the option of evolution, Yahoo! Mail and other. Using Ubuntu.

The ability to associate "mailto" with email web applications was added in Firefox 3. Instructions have been available online to add GMail to the list of email web applications since then, but with the latest version GMail is in the default list. I'm not sure exactly when it was added either, but it would have been either 3.01 or 3.02. Unfortunately, it's not mentioned in the release notes for either version.

It's worked fine for me since 3.00 – I added Gmail to my list of providers back then.

Huh.. When did they add that!?! Must be pretty damn recent, as I actually tried to do that the other week, and it wasn't there!

It works for me, but the links open in a new tab (I want them to open in my current GMail session! it's possible, Ubiquity(1) does that! -when you say "mail this to abcexample.com" it opens the Compose page with the address and the content of the mail-)

Worst case senario: Install Gtalk

I have been banging my head against the wall trying to add the same functionality to Chrome, and the only success i have found was with using the GTalk application

It's nice that Mozilla has added this as a built-in option, but as has been said, there were a number of pre-existing options for those of you for whom this option doesn't work.

the ONLY reason I suggest Gtalk is if you use anything as WELL as the e-mail.

if you use gtalk, if you want a local contact list, or if you want local notifications (push/popups like msn) when you get messages.

These are the ONLY reasons to use gtalk as a mailto for gmail

Of if you REALLY need this fix for Google Chrome.

otherwise, i HIGHLY endorse this post and USBmans sollution as a superior one :)

Mine is only good if you want ADDITIONAL gmail perks then JUST mailto, OR if you need mailto for CHROME

I'm not seeing this feature (Firefox 3.0.3). I've tested it on two PC's.

Yahoo mail is supported since the official 3.0 release. Gmail was added in 3.0.2 IIRC, and Hotmail/live.com mail might be added in the near future.

Please note that other mail providers which are not listed in Firefox defaults can also enjoy this feature. Mail providers can (and should!) follow the protocols handler API (developer.mozilla.org/en/Web-b ...) provided by Firefox and provide support for their users to use their webmail service right after clicking on a mailto: link.

its not working for me at all. I normally use a grease monkey script. I uninstalled it and tried this and it doesn't work so back to the gm script.

Firefox 3.0.3
about:config
search for :-
gecko.handlerService.schemes.mailto.1.uriTemplate
and change to
mail.google.com/a/yourdomain.c ...
or
mail.google.com/mail/?extsrc=m ...

It works fine for me.
